ESPN Gets Rid Of Scripted Shows After “Bronx Is Burning” Failure
September 17th, 2007 . by Dell
I remember watching the previews for The Bronx Is Burning before it aired, I took one look at that horrible wig they had on the guy playing Reggie Jackson and decided that was enough. Why can we put people on the moon but still can’t simulate a black person’s afro properly?? I’m just saying…
The Bronx Is Burning was just the latest in a string of craptastic scripted shows ESPN has put on over the years. 3: The Dale Earnhardt story, and Hustle: The Pete Rose story both ranked pretty low in entertainment value. But it seems like this one was the nail in the coffin.
ESPN is taking a timeout from the scripted business. With the end this week of the eight-part miniseries “The Bronx Is Burning,” nothing else is planned or likely to be green-lighted any time soon, ESPN executives said Thursday.
Instead, the company will spend more time on its bread and butter sports properties and news-oriented shows while announcing plans to run selected documentaries.
Today, ESPN executives say that sports and strictly sports-related content are what its audience wants.
That statement in bold cracked me up, like it was a startling revelation that people want to see real sports stuff instead of acting. Maybe he should call MTV and tell them that people actually want to see videos.
You know what ESPN scripted show was actually good though? Playmakers.
Unlike the Dale Earnhardt movie, and the Pete Rose flick, it wasn’t a fluff piece. It didn’t tell us something we had already seen with our own eyes before. Millions of people wanted to see what professional athletes do after the game, like doing lines off the buttcheeks of a girl named Sapphire. They canceled it after the NFL started whining about their image.
It’s been all downhill from there, now if we can just get them to stop airing “Stump The Schwab” we’ll be going someplace.

did u forget about playmakers. oops, u mentioned it. i loved that show. do they still air that stupid schaud show? who is the that guy anyway?
They can get rid of Poker, while they’re at it.
I thought the Bronx is Burning was half-way decent, but then again, that was one of the first teams I read about when I got into the game, so that always helps. The only problem they had with it, and it’s the same thing they do with all their own productions, is that they vastly overplayed it. Not a shock, but there are a lot of good sports that they leave off the TV for the 15th repeat.
