Juan Diaz vs. Julio Diaz Lightweight Title Bout; Round By Round

October 13th, 2007 . by Dell

Juan Diaz Juan and Julio Diaz face off in a 12 round Lightweight unification title bout tonight, and after that snoozefest Evander Holyfield put on earlier today we deserve a great fight. I’m not rooting for either guy, I just want to see a great fight. Unortunately, Larry Merchant is ringside and will probably tell some unrelated story about his grandfathers antique watch collection after the fight. He appears to be wearing a jacket from the 80s that he refuses to let go, you know old people are stuck in their ways.

In any event, the fight should be starting very shortly. Refresh the page every 4 minutes for updates. I am also about to break the world record for most “Juan” and “Julio”‘s typed in one post ever.

Round 1
Both fighters come out fast and strong, throwing meaningful shots. Juan lands the first hard right hand of the fight. Juan looks terribly confident with an aggressive workrate. Although Juan has landed a few hard combos, Julio doesn’t seem shaken or discouraged. Theres already been more action in the first round of this fight than the entire Holyfield bout this morning. Julio already has a light mark around his eye.

10-9 Juan Diaz’s round

Round 2
Juan charges out and immediately starts throwing punches, few of which land. Julio seems to be more comfortable fighting on the inside. Juan is ripping off generous amounts of punches with bad intentions. Julio is doing a great job of keeping his composure in the midst of these ferocious shots. The two men stand in the middle of the ring and trade hard furious shots, Juan got the best of the exchange but Julio is doing a perfect job of not backing down and receiving a relatively low amount of punishment considering the circumstances.

10-9 Juan Diaz’s round

Round 3
Through the first half of the round, Julio has done his best job thisfar of keeping his distance and landing good shots. Juan isn’t deterred by Julio’s punching, every 15 seconds or so he unleashes a flurry of hard shots and occasionally lands one. Juan lands two hard shots and Julio throws a beautiful counter shot that backs him up slightly. Julio won this round by a hair, but it could feasibly go the other way.

10-9 Julio Diaz’s round

Round 4
Not as much action as the first three rounds, Julio Diaz has spent most of the round trying to avoid the hard flurries thrown by Juan. Throwing potshots and jabs trying to get his opponent off balance. Juan is completely confident and in control, throwing at will. Eventually one of these vicious shots are gonna find a home and it will be lights out. It seems like a matter of time at this pace. Juan Diaz’s round

10-9 Juan Diaz’s round

Round 5
The two fighters seem comfortable enough squaring up in the middle of the ring throwing shots. Juan’s look and sound significantly more powerful than Julio’s. Julio actually appears to be throwing the most punches, but they’re pitty pat compared to bomb-flurries Juan unleashes. Julio’s trainers just told him he’s getting pushed around like a woman.

10-9 Juan’s round

Round 6
Not much action in the first 40 seconds or so. Juan throws a hard combo that finds a home and Julio pushes him into the corner, which earns a warning from the ref. Juan lands a hard right shot, which surprisingly does not stun Julio. Julio may not be winning the fight but he’s showing he can take a relatively good asskicking. He’s not exactly getting pummeled but he CLEARLY is not winning the fight. Julio’s corner just told him he needs to win all of the following rounds to have a chance to win

10-9 Juan’s round

Round 7
The guys are basically standing toe to toe, slightly hunched over throwing a zillion punches at each other Rock’em Sock’em robots style. Thats the best way to describe it. Julio’s punching just doesn’t seem to faze Juan whatsoever. Julio is now swollen under the left eye. Juan is really opening up his offense, firing off combos at will. There have been several moments where it looked like Julio might be ready to wilt but he’s soldiering on. Julio’s corner is telling him they’re gonna stop the fight if he doesn’t do SOMETHING.

10-9 Juan’s round

Round 8
With Julio so far behind on the scorecards, and his apparent lack of punching power, the likelihood that he’ll come out with a victory is extremely slim. Don King is sitting ringside smiling for no apparent reason at all, thats how you know when you’re rich. This round of action has been more of the same, Juan Diaz landing the more effective shots. Julio Diaz weakly jabbing and trying to avoid the flurries.

10-9 Juan’s round

Julio Diaz’s corner threw in the towel. The fight is over, Juan Diaz is now the undisputed lightweight champion of the world. His record improves to 33-0

Juan made extremely light work of his opponent. While the fight wasn’t terribly competitive, it somewhat cleansed the foul taste of the Holyfield fight out of my mouth.
