MLB Loses Its Battle To Copyright Baseball Facts
October 16th, 2007 . by Dell
Every once in a while, a story comes along that makes you say “WHAT?!?!“, this happened to be one of those times for me. Major League Baseball took it upon themselves to claim ownership of “facts” pertaining to baseball, including stats and player names. Basically meaning any fantasy sports service would have to pay a fee in order to merely use statistics… you know… words… text….characters.
Who is handling public relations for MLB? If my sport used to be the national pastime, but suffered a severe decline in popularity and surpassed by the NFL, and then had its biggest stars revealed as steroid addicts…. I’d be DESPERATE to earn some goodwill with my fan base, which would include not nickel and diming them to play fantasy baseball online. They should be happy to keep the fans they have now. Is Bud Selig proving to be the most inept jackass commissioner in all of professional sports or what?
I want Bud Selig to do SOMETHING right before his term is over. Just one thing.
