Genarlow Wilson Freed In Consensual Sex Case
October 26th, 2007 . by Dell
Georgia’s Supreme Court ordered Genarlow Wilson to be released after spending two years behind bars. Wilson was imprisoned after being convicted of aggravated child molestation when he had consensual oral sex with a 15 year old girl at a New Years Eve party, Wilson was 17 at the time. The court ruled 4-3 that Genarlow’s sentence was cruel and unusual punishment, I’m happy he’s been released but who were the three jackasses that didn’t want to see this boy released?
Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears wrote in the majority opinion that the changes in the law “represent a seismic shift in the legislature’s view of the gravity of oral sex between two willing teenage participants.”
Sears wrote that the severe punishment makes “no measurable contribution to acceptable goals of punishment” and that Wilson’s crime did not rise to the “level of adults who prey on children.”
Although it’s great he’s out of jail, what does he have to go back to now? Before he got locked up he was being recruited by a few colleges and could have played some ball, but that’s almost certainly out of the question now. Some folks are already donating money for a scholarship fund so he can continue his education, hopefully that turns out okay. Who knows what two years behind bars did to his frame of mind, those are two years he’ll never get back no matter how much money he eventually gets.
