So, Fernando Vargas is retiring after tomorrow night and will throw down with Ricardo Mayorga in his last match. As Jim Ross would say, this fight is just about guaranteed to be a SLOBBERKNOCKER.

If you don’t like boxing, but you like to see two guys abandon all sense of professionalism and beat the living shit out of each other, here’s your chance. Both Vargas and Mayorga are knuckleheads who just so happen to box for money and they hate each other, there is no better mix of ingredients for an explosive fight. They even came to blows at the pre-fight press conference.
(the date on the poster to the right is incorrect, the fight was postponed from Sept.)
Before I get into fight particulars and predictions I have to say Fernando’s career has been pretty disappointing.
Sure, if he was a journeyman or a mediocre fighter then we could all rejoice and say he had a good run, but Vargas had the talent to be one of the elites. Instead of heading towards a Hall Of Fame induction like Shane Mosley, he’ll be known as an “almost” or “could have been”. He almost beat Trinidad, he almost beat De La Hoya, he almost beat Mosley (okay maybe not). Fernando could never rise to the occasion when he got to the big stage and that will forever be the black mark on his career.
If history repeats itself tomorrow, Fernando will once again fail when he faces off with Mayorga in his retirement match. But the unique thing about this bout is the sheer unpredictability each man possesses. Mayorga fights like a wild boar, Fernando likes to throw bombs and mix it up, if this match went past round 6 i’d be thoroughly shocked.
Fernando likes to brawl, but has boxing skills to fall back on if all else fails, Mayorga has nothing but his balls and wild hooks. On paper Fernando is clearly the winner but in all honesty the winner will be the guy who doesn’t get tired first.
Fernando has problems getting in shape for his fights, and Mayorga’s training involves beer and cigarettes, so we’re looking for a 4th round knockout from either guy.
