NFL Fines Falcons For Supporting Vick; Contradicts Themselves

Profootball Talk is reporting that the NFL has fined Roddy White, Alge Crumpler, DeAngelo Hall, Chris Houston, and Joe Horn for honoring their team mate during last week’s telecast of Monday Night Football. The official reasons for these fines are “uniform violations”, because the NFL has a strict set of guidelines when it comes to players modifying their appearance.
Here’s where I have a problem.

Roddy White wore a shirt under his jersey that said “Free Mike Vick”, this was not visible unless he lifted his jersey and therefore did not alter his uniform. For the NFL to fine him is extremely nitpicky. But wait… theres more.
A few weeks ago Clinton Portis did THE EXACT SAME THING in tribute to Sean Taylor, who was murdered just a few days earlier. Clinton Portis was not fined by the NFL for this gesture, nor should he have been.
I’m not disputing Clinton Portis wanting to honor Taylor, I thought it was great, but the fact that the NFL chose not to fine him but are now choosing to fine Roddy White for the exact same thing is bullshit. It’s the exact same rule, and they should not be able to pick and choose when they want to enforce it. Just because they might not like Michael Vick doesn’t mean they can impose their ideals on the players.
Roger Goodell is back on my shitlist.

I agree with you.
mike vick is a moron
That has absolutely nothing to do with the point I made, but thanks for commenting.
Sportaphile, as soon as I started readin my mind jumped to Clinton Portis. Darth Goodell, hypocritical? Don’t answer that was rhetorical.
Showing support for someone who is dead is different than showing support for a convicted felon.
[...] Chris Houston do–was the NFL being hypocritical in their handling of the Falcons players? As pointed out by Sportaphile, Clinton Portis wore something similar to Roddy White’s under-shirt a couple of weeks ago to [...]
La,
you have to understand that people are now being fined due to someones PERSONAL OPINION, not a rule. You really have to wrap your head around that one.
It’s like the cops seeing 2 people breaking into a bank, but only arrests one of them. When you ask him why he didn’t arrest the first guy the cops says “oh he needed the money, so i figured I’d let him go, thats different”.
The world doesn’t work like that. The NFL cannot play god with the rules.
I tell you what, if it will make you happy I’ll pass this article onto the NFL and tell them that you want Clinton Portis fined.
Vick is a low life scum bag who likes to torture small furrry animals. Just seeing that on their uniform makes me want to vomit!
It’s actually scary that some people think like this. You are so blinded by your hatred of Michael Vick that you can’t see that this is moreso about the NFL than him.
You also skipped over the part in my post that said Clinton Portis should NOT be fined.
If you want to write to the NFL, tell them to fine everyone the same or not at all. It’s a pretty simple and fair concept.
I agree with you. I do not appreciate what Vick has done to the Falcons but I agree if you are going to have a rule it has to be the same across the board! Why was Chris Houston fined? I can’t find anything on that
You’re absolutely right..either enforce the rule for all, or don’t, but you can’t have it both ways. If the players don’t run Gene “please massa please” Upshaw out and get real hard-nosed union representation and stop accepting being treated like well paid Mede the Mandingos, then they have no one to blame, but themselves. I’m certain the Falcons players were well aware of the fines beforehand and chose to support their teammate (props to em), but the NFL must fine everyone or no one.
On another note, I find it extremely funny that the so-called “fans” that are so up in arms over the MV7 eye patches and “Free Mike Vick” T-shirts are the same people who pay homage to their treasonous ancestors every year, join organizations devoted to honoring these war criminals and continue to holler about a flag that represents genocide….but yet, they have a problem with DHall and Alge openly supporting a friend??
It’s pretty simple:
One man is a convicted felon. The other man is dead.
