The 10 Most Shocking Sports Moments Of 2007

December 19th, 2007 . by Dell

10. The Isiah Thomas Trial – September

Oh man… I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone with as much egg on their face as Isiah during his sexual harassment trial. What part was most damaging? Was it the moment he said black men can call women bitches but not whites? Was it the moment he tried to re-enact a scene from “Love & Basketball”? Was it the moment he said the Knicks season ticket holders could kiss his ass? Take your pick.

9. Bobby Petrino and Nick Saban Chunk Up The Deuce And Hit The Road- December/January
Loyalty Schmoyalty. These two playas didn’t have time to stick around and rebuild franchises, they wanted success and money. Neither man even had the decency to face their team in person to tell them they were leaving, Saban and Petrino disappeared like thieves in the night.

8. Floyd Mayweather Knocks Out Ricky Hatton- December
It wasn’t shocking that Floyd won the match, it was shocking that he knocked Ricky Hatton out. Even the most dedicated Floyd Mayweather fans weren’t crazy enough to predict he could knock out Hatton, who somehow had a reputation for having an iron chin. (see the video here)

7. Marion Jones Admits To Using Steroids- October
Marion could write a book on how to be a great liar, she had the entire nation convinced. I think we were all hypnotized by that stray tooth at the top of her gums, it has a soothing effect. What’s even more remarkable is her ability to fade away after confessing her guilt. She could be working at Subway right now for all we know. (see the video here)

6. Michael Vick Goes To Jail – August/December
This isn’t one event, but moreso a series of events that led up to Vick’s incarceration. Michael Vick has caused some hot debates on this website, but one thing we all agree on, is he’s a huge idiot. I can’t recall seeing someone fall from grace so fast in my life, even Mike Tyson took longer than this. Tyson didn’t lose his money until a good 12 years after his rise to superstardom.

5. Clemens Mitchell Report- December
How fitting was it that the greatest pitcher of this generation got matching steroid allegations with the greatest hitter? It made entirely too much sense, but yet nobody seen it coming. I have a feeling this whole Clemens ordeal will blow over soon, and we’ll be back to Bonds bashing in no time.

4. The Deaths Of Sean Taylor & Diego Corrales – November/May
Diego Corrales gave us one of the greatest fights in boxing history and Sean Taylor was arguably the best safety in the NFL. Both men tragically lost their lives in horrible accidents. I still get goosebumps watching the 10th round of that Corrales fight.

3. Kelly Pavlik upsets (and Knocks Out) Jermain Taylor – October
I know boxing isn’t very popular in America anymore, but if you didn’t see this fight you missed out on one of the most exciting brawls in recent history. The champion, Jermain Taylor, looked as if he was on his way to another knockout victory in the second round when he sent his opponent to the ground. The problem is… his opponent actually got up.. and the rest was history. (see the video here)

2. Chris Benoit Kills Family- June
I haven’t regularly watched wrestling since high school, but this story was a major shock to the nation. Chris Benoit was regarded as one of the nicest guys in the industry and loved by everyone, so the news of him strangling his wife and son still don’t seem right. Nobody knows why it happened, and nobody ever will.

1. Indianapolis Colts Miraculous AFC Championship Comeback – January
I put this at number one, because unlike most of the other moments, its a pure old fashioned underdog story. During their AFC Championship match, the New England Patriots jumped to an early 21-3 lead and the Colts were dead in the water. Tom Brady owned Peyton’s playoff soul and we all knew it. But somehow Indy mounts a miraculous comeback and overcomes their biggest tormentor. Game over, hello championship.

If Vick’s fall surprises you, then you must not have read either of Bill Rhoden’s books.
