The 2nd blockbuster trade that makes sense…Mike Bibby to the Atlanta Hawks
February 19th, 2008 . by Stankoniforous OneStank-0 likes the trade. It is like this but not at all like this. The Maloofs have spent all their cake in Vegas, the Kings have been in free fall, and it’s time for Extreme Makeover: Sac-Town Edition. This move makes cents on so many levels.
The Hawks have enough 6′9″ wing players to outfit the entire Eastern Conference, but no point guard. They have a small shooting guard posing as point in Acie Law, but that’s not working. Instead of acquiring one through their ubiquitous top 10 picks the Hawks grab Marvin Williams instead of Paul or Williams? Shelden Williams over Brandon Roy? Who’s the GM down there, Billy King? Close, it’s Billy Knight. Whichever Billy it is, he needs his head examined, EARLY!
In a weak East, the Hawks might slide into the playoffs on the skin of their teeth. Beyond that….nada. That’s an improvement over the stat quo in ATL which is planning for your summer after the All Star Game.
On the Kings’ side, this gets Bibby’s cake off the bankroll. It looks like Ron Captain Slap-a-Hoe Artest is next to move, then Brad My best days were in Indy Miller. Where is the next question. The Kings also get some trade bait or expiring contracts which is even better.
Where this runs into problems is with shots, ie everyone wants theirs. Before Bibby’s arrival there already weren’t enough shots on the team, and Bibby isn’t exactly a pass-first playmaker.
Stank-0 will go on a limb and say this move squarely puts the Hawks into the playoffs no less than a #6.
