BET’s Iron Ring: The Review
March 18th, 2008 . by Dell
BET’s Iron Ring MMA reality show premiered tonight, and while I initially had my reservations about the show’s idea, I watched it anyways. After checking out the first hour of programming, I can’t say that I’m too impressed, but I’ll probably keep tuning in due to my love of Hip Hop and sports. The production values and editing don’t appear to be all that good (what was up with them showing clips of all the knockouts we’ll see in the future? Doesn’t that ruin suspense for us?).
Likes:
- Wild personalities (Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett, Floyd Mayweather, Lil Jon, Jim Jones). You can put these men in ANY setting and it’s guaranteed to be some comedy.
- Shonie Carter looks like a street pimp who could actually put one of his hoes in the hospital if he backhands her.
- It took 20 minutes of the program to get to the part where Floyd Mayweather talks about how much money he has…. not bad… not bad.
Dislikes:
- The narrator, is that Fat Man Scoop’s voice? Why is it when the powers that be want to appeal to black people, they get a narrator who sounds like he wants to rob you? Dude I’m just trying to watch TV you don’t have to scream.
- LMAO @ T.I. saying he’s never lost a fight before. This guy is about 5’7 and 150lbs soaking wet yet he’s never received an asskicking? Uh huh, sure buddy.
- In the two 30 minute episodes that aired, they didn’t get much of anything accomplished. The first episode was filled with the rappers doing general smack talking. The second episode featured a (seemingly) unorganized “combine-like” training session with the fighters.

You pretty much ‘hit the nail on the head.’ As a MMA fan and practicioner of BJJ I wanted to see these aspects only. T.I.’s comments bugged me to distraction.
It is fine if they want to develop the fighters’ personality but they can save the celebrity analysis..
