Is Baseball Still “America’s Game” If It’s Full Of Latinos?

April 16th, 2008 . by Dell

Alfonso Soriano lolcatThere’s been a little study floating around for the last day or so stating that only 8.2% of the MLB was African-American. While the number of black players is decreasing, it’s also true for white players. Several factors have contributed to a noticeable rise in Latino athletes in the game.

While watching ESPN’s First Take one of the hosts raised a great question, “Is baseball still America’s game if it’s full of latino players?

Baseball is very popular in spanish speaking countries and GM’s love traveling there to sign players for cheap. If this trend continues for 5, 10, or 15 years, will baseball still be “as American as apple pie”??

Call me cynical, but I can’t see a country of white kids being brought up to idolize guys named “Alfonso Soriano” like they did Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle.

Speak on it…

[Note: I am in no way implying that Latino players diminish the game of baseball. If you took it that way, it was not my intention]

I hear what you’re saying and I agree. It’s not a slam against Latino players, it’s just the way the game has changed over the years. The demographics are different. It’s just how it is.

Here’s another response to that recent study, this one addressing the notion that Jackie Robinson would be upset over black baseball players’ dwindling numbers:
