The Sports Media Turned On Marvin Harrison Already

harrisonSal Paolantonio appeared on ESPN’s Mike & Mike In The Morning today and took Marvin Harrison to the woodshed. I was a little startled by the manner in which Sal threw around words like “cop killing gun” and “armor piercing bullets” when referring to Harrison. Sal’s exact words are below (and you can listen to them in the video also)

“The guns bullets were advertised as being able to penetrate…listen to this…48 layers of kevlar [armor] at 50 meters. Now who wears kevlar other than police officers? This gun is designed to be a cop killer.”

When you listen to the video, notice how Paolantonio nonchalantly segues between Marvin’s case and a completely unrelated case of cops being murdered in Philadelphia. It does a huge disservice to Harrison to even be mentioned alongside people targeting officers of the law.

I was even MORE disturbed by the fact that Sal was appalled at the fact that Marvin Harrison was in the neighborhood he grew up in. He sounded shocked that Marvin opened a sports bar in the rough section of Philadelphia and actually worked there too.

I agree with you Sal. How DARE Marvin want to help out the poor community he grew up in by opening businesses there. How DARE he not pull a Tiger Woods and pretend like the ghetto doesn’t exist.

This isn’t a Marvin Harrison defense post, I just wanted to point out how fast a guy can go from “the class of the NFL” to a “guy hanging out in the ghetto with a cop killing gun” real quick. You would think Sal would have at least waited until Marvin was charged with a crime or something….

Wait?!? Are you crazy? They like their meat for lynching FRESH. Guilt or Innocence is not a prerequisite…all that matters is that the meat is fresh.

Yeah, they’re going to throw him under the bus. I’m a loyal Colts fan, and will remain a Colts fan, and a Marvin Harrison fan. Marvin Harrison is a quiet guy, and do I fault him for having weapons? No. I’ve spoke to a lot of Colts season ticket holders and not one person has waivered in their support of Marvin Harrison. If he was threatened by a patron of his bar, which it seemed that this was an ongoing issue, then he had the right to defend himself. 50 caliber or not, he had that right. And I support Harrison in investing back in the hood.

Any black man with a 50 cal weapon scares the shit outta white people. That’s media gold and analysts know this. This is race-baiting pure and simple. If that had been say Wes Welker, the issue of cop-killing would have never come up.

He’s a fuckin IDIOT. The reason why they advertise it as penetrating kevlar is to give people a frame of reference. What else would you say to give someone an idea of how powerful a gun is?

What I really want to know is, is the gun legally owned?

  5. [...] Mike and Mike today. In the end thou, Sal made himself look like as much of an ass. Take a look at Sportaphile.com, they’ve got a video of the [...]

This is sad. I have lost any respect I had for Sal as a journalist and a person. How reckless can you get? It’s an amazing that athletes give back to their communities when they easily could not. The fact that Sal is criticizing him for this is shameful.

…i bet he’s never even walked in that part of North Philly… the area is not really THAT bad… i walk through there everyday and *gasp* …sometimes even after the sun goes down…. sal is just another main line/ south jersey elitist trying to tell someone else what to do… i really wish he’d move out of the philly media scene for good
