Roy Jones Jr. Is A Certified Idiot
July 9th, 2008 . by DellSo, Roy Jones Jr. has signed up to face Light Heavyweight champ Joe Calzaghe on September 20th. I fully expect Roy to win (I’ve always considered Joe to be overrated), and I think Roy’s “career hiccup” with Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson gave him extra hunger.
So I guess you’re asking, why is Jones an idiot then?
Check out this little blurb from ESPN.
Jones added that after the Calzaghe fight, he would like to go back up to heavyweight, where he made history by winning a title against John Ruiz in 2003 to become the first former middleweight champion to win a heavyweight title in more than a century.
His target: Samuel Peter, who owns one of the heavyweight titles.
“They call Samuel Peter ‘The Nightmare,’” Jones said. “I’ll give him a nightmare. I like to do stuff people think I can’t do. But I am really looking forward to fighting Joe first.
……………….. what?
I don’t think he’s crazy because he can’t beat Sam Peter (I can easily see Jones outpointing Peter with speed and finesse like he did John Ruiz). However, real fans of boxing know that the rapid weight gains and losses took a HUGE toll on Roy’s body in the past. You could make a great argument that his jump up to heavyweight was the precursor to his dramatic fall against Tarver.
Jones is almost 40 years old, and he’d be much better suited sticking to a lighter weight class to finish his career.
