ESPN’s Outside The Lines ran a report on USC’s O.J. Mayo receiving illegal benefits from his first year in highschool all the way up until last year. In the last 4-5 years Mayo has received up to $30,000 in cash and gifts in exchange for a verbal agreement to sign with BDA management when he made it to the NBA.

There are two things in this story that crack me up.

1. BDA management actually paid out $200,000 for O.J. Mayo, but most of that money was taken and spent by the middleman, Rodney Guillory.

2. You HAVE to see the look on O.J.’s face when ESPN puts him on the spot questioning these allegations. It reminds me of Miguel Tejada’s interview with E:60 a few weeks ago. Check it out in the vid below….

The following video is O.J. Mayo’s carefully thought out response to the above report.

Bill Self, of the newly crowned National Champion Kansas Jayhawks, has turned down Oklahoma State. Stank-0 wrote about this here.

For those not in the know, Oklahoma State University has a billionaire booster, T. Boone Pickens. Pickens famously donated $165M to the school. Self could have easily been the highest paid college basketball coach, and only a few college football coaches would have been higher compensated.

Now Stank-0 being a Kansas alum is clearly biased in this instance, but Kansas would still have been Kansas if Self had chosen to take the OSU position. Larry Brown is available and he has stated his regret at leaving. If not Brown, then the living legend, Danny Manning, is actual on the coaching staff at Kansas right now.

This also signifies that the days of a 20+ year head coach are over. There are very few coaching institutions save Coach K, Coach Roy, and Jim Boeheim. Expect Self to leave after about 8-10 seasons in Lawrence.

File this under…no one cares, but Ohio State got past UMass for the NIT title. The NIT is normally uninteresting, but this year especially. All four 1 seeds advanced to the Final Four for the first time in history! That just makes the NIT even more uninteresting.

Stank-0 is sure those college kids played their hearts out too, but it’s the NIT. The NIT is the equivalent to being Mr. Irrelevant in the NFL, the last pick of the draft. Let the players explain:

“This is what happens when you put an NCAA tournament team in the NIT,” Butler yelled, surrounded by his teammates after beating Massachusetts 92-85 in the title game Thursday night. “Write that down and send that to the committee.”

Stank-0 has to disagree, because NCAA tournament teams are in the NCAA tournament. Look kid, no one expected a return to the Dance after losing Oden and Conley. Life goes on, keep you head up, cliche, cliche, etc., etc. blah blah…fill in the blank.

Even the guy in the pic above, Kosta Koufos, doesn’t look like he wants to be in the pic. Stank-0 can imagine he lost a bet and had to hold the “trophy.”

Any instance of me viewing an NCAA basketball game is usually under forced circumstances.

I was in the barbershop about two weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon. I didn’t make an appointment so I was forced to sit and wait for about 90 minutes until it was my turn. The battery on my cell phone died and I read about 83 magazines and then had to face reality in form of the television. Some Georgetown basketball game was on and I just couldn’t bring myself to care what happened one way or the other.

Unless someone literally dies on the court or something, you won’t hear a peep out of me. I’ll leave college hoops to Stank-O.

Maybe I should use this “sports downtime” and actually update the Criminal Fantasy League.

March Madness officially begins on Thursday! No, this will not be a post filled with who should have gotten in, who shouldn’t have gotten in, comparing RPIs, etc. etc. No, this is about highlighting first round games to watch.

<strike>USC vs K-State</strike> OJ Mayo vs. Michael Beasley. Righty vs. Lefty. Quicksilver vs. blunt force object. Why else watch this game? Two top-10 NBA draft picks go head up in Omaha, Nebraska. The only excitement that Omaha gets around this time of year is the start of spring ball for the Cornhuskers, so this game will be a pretty big deal. Effectively this is a home game for the Manhattan, Kansas-based Wildcats. Expect the camera to show Pat Riley and some Knicks officials more than a few times during this game. Pat, if you’re smart, take Beasley!

That’s the only must-see game, but of course keep an eye on all the 8 vs 9, 5 vs 12, and 7 vs 10. That’s where an upset is most likely to occur.

Since Stank-0 lives in the <strike>not-so Chocolate City</strike> District, he will try to finagle some tickets to <strike>boo at </strike>watch Arizona and Duke play.

Duke basketball has not been as strong of late. Back-to-back losses to Wake Forest and Miami! Duke is a favorite target because they are successful, but there has been a noticeable talent drop off recently.

That talent drain has converged nicely with the Snyder-ization. For those unfamiliar with the Big XII, the effect is the namesake of former Kansas State football head coach whom had a habit of loading up on lesser competition in non-conference play. K-State routinely had more cupcakes than Little Debbie. K-State rose to prominence but peaked in 1998, losing a shot at the national title by falling to Texas A&M in the Big XII title game. It has since become SOP, standard operating procedure, for many football programs nationwide.

Duke seems to be following the Snyder SOP to the T. A sugary diet of cupcakes in non-conference games, leaving them brutally unprepared for an unforgiving ACC conference slate. Since their last ‘ship, 2001, Duke has flamed out to Indiana in 2002 (Sweet 16), Kansas in 2003 (Sweet 16), UConn in 2004 (Final Four), Mich St in 2005 (Sweet 16), LSU in 2006 (Sweet 16), and VCU in 2007 (1st round). Now most coaches would make a deal with Mephistopheles for that kind of run, but again this is Duke.

Expectations are sky-high every season, why else would Dicky V’s mouth be surgically attached to Coach K’s derriere? Stank-0 isn’t sure that Duke has hit bottom yet, either. *Smile* Life is good! The Patriots lost in the Super Bowl and Duke is coming back down to Earth! Long live the underdog!

Sportaphile hasn’t updated the Criminal Fantasy League standings since mid-december. As a result, tons and tons of things have piled up. At this point it would take forever to deliver my Pulitzer Prize winning commentary to accompany each story. So we’ll cover them in rapid fire succession.

Did we miss any stories? If so, don’t be afraid to send an email or reply in the comments! The full updated standings can be found at the bottom of this post.

Sportaphile is gaining tons of new visitors each month, so if you have no idea what the CFL is, CLICK HERE to get the lowdown & rules.

Football
New England Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss has been accused of battering a longtime friend and preventing her from seeking medical attention. Although he hasn’t been arrested yet, we DO give points for “alleged” crimes in a reduced capacity. If he is eventually charged, we will update this point total to the appropriate amount. For now we can chalk up 25 points for Randy and the football squad.

Tennessee dumbass Pacman Jones allegedly punched a divorce lawyer in the face earlier this month. Like Randy Moss, he has not been arrested and will receive a reduced allegation penalty. 25 points for dumb dumb.

Former guard for the Chicago Bears, Todd Burger, was arrested for his part in an alleged internet gambling ring. 100 points for he footballers.

University of Minnesota football player William VanDeSteeg was charged with two counts of fifth degree assault after getting into it with a couple guys in front of a liquor store. That’s 100 points.

Oklahoma starting defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger was sent home before the Fiesta Bowl in Arizona. Turns out Granger went shopping at a local mall, and decided to use his five finger discount. Yeah, that’ll look really good on your resume. /sarcasm That’s 50 points.

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Stockar McDougle is being charged with felony and misdemeanor battery charges after pushing a store owner and employee, over a billing dispute. Thats 150 points.

Minnesota Vikings safety Dwight Smith and defensive end Darrion Scott were cited in seperate incidents for misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Thats 100 points.

Finally the “you big dummy” criminal of the week goes to Pernell Thompson, a football player at Wingate University. Thompson and his wife are charged in the stabbing death of his 16 year old ex-girlfriend. Thats 100 points for his felony charge (his wife doesn’t count)

Football has accumilated 650 points since mid December.

=================================

Basketball

Former Georgia Tech basketball player Will Bynum (who is playing in Israel) was arrested after running over a man after leaving a nightclub brawl. Thats 50 points.

Turns out he was binge drinking at a hotel less than a week after he was released for a prior alcohol related violation. Maybe he needs to be in rehab, instead of jail… just a thought. 50 points.

Former MLB player Jim Leyritz faces charges of DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage. 200 points

finally fell off? Last season they lost more games in ACC play than they have in years. The talent was not what we have come to expect from Duke. Instead of Grant Hill, Elton Brand, and Carlos Boozer we had to stomach Josh McRoberts (who under the influence of friends, on that Canadian green, decided to declare for the draft). That didn’t stop Dick Vitale from jockin though, never that. S.O. thinks that Vitale is contractually bound to hang on Duke’s nuts, but that’s another entry.

Now we have Duke losing to Pitt (64-65) in triple overtime. Maybe Coach K might want to let go of the Team USA joint. It seems like it’s splittin his attention. If you notice Team USA has been playin great but Duke has been dookie? Really think on that. Coach K got Kobe to forego his numbers to play lights out D in a tourney that America could sleepwalk through! Yet he couldn’t get McRoberts to stay for another year, which young’n sorely needed. Is McRoberts even in the league?

I’m just sayin….
