This just in. After 14 years, 2 Super Bowls, and countless games with that maroon face, the axe fell on Coach Mike Shanahan of the Denver Broncos. This makes him the 4th NFL coach in 2 days to get his walking papers, including the NY Jets’ Eric “Mangenius” Mangini, Cleveland’s Romeo Crennel, and the Detroit Lions’ Rod Marinelli (big surprise!)
The difference between Shanahan and the rest? Yes, Mike Shanny got fired, but he also walks away with more than $20 million. For that kind of money, especially in these hard-ass economic times, who really cares??
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Tatum, here’s a quick and dirty rundown. The Detroit Lions fired Tatum because they signed Rudi Johnson, so as an act of revenge (or desperation), Tatum decides to steal Rudi’s bags on his way out of the building. Tatum first tried to play it off as a practical joke, but security cameras and other people he tried to involve debunked his story. Therefore this left Tatum without a job and teams who may have been interested steered clear because he was now known as a locker room thief.
“”I had a job at the mall, man, just supporting my family, doing what I could do,” Bell said, adding the experience helped him become a better man. “I think it helped me mature and respect the real world. Now, I’ve really got a lot more respect for people that work 9-to-5.”
I know some of you may think Tatum did this to keep himself busy or stay grounded…. but the part of his quote that mentions “supporting my family’” makes me think he actually needed the money.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with earning a living in retail, but if you’ve been playing professional football for three and a half years you should have a little money to hold you over right? Was he so broke that he IMMEDIATELY needed to start filling out apps at the mall? I know rookie contracts can be small but jesus h. christ.
It’s scary how many of these guys make hundreds of thousands (and sometimes millions) of dollars, yet they are so close to poverty due to mismanagement. You may have just signed a $10 million dollar contract but you’re just 3 steps from working at Kinkos.
FYI… Tatum just signed a new 1 year/600,000 contract with Denver…. let’s hope things work out okay for him. 600k has to be like …… 20 years worth of Verizon Wireless kiosk pay right?
At one point during the 4th quarter of Thursday’s Broncos/Browns matchup, Brandon Marshall scored (what would go on to be) the game winning touchdown. He immediately reached into his pants and pulled out a special glove as a TD celebration when Stokley rushed over and stopped him.
Brandon explains what would have gone down in the video below.
I never pay attention to Jay Cutler, so I have no idea how cocky or humble the guy is, but this guy made the cardinal sin of evoking the name of John Elway in Denver.
“I have a stronger arm than John [Elway], hands down,” Cutler said. “I’ll bet on it against anybody’s in the league. Brett Favre’s got a cannon. But on game days, there’s nobody in the league who’s going to throw it harder than I am at all.”
Not only is he comparing himself to a 2-time Super Bowl winning hometown hero, he’s making an incorrect claim about how good his arm strength is. Living in the Bay Area, I have the unfortunate experience of watching every Oakland Raiders game, and I can say without question Jamarcus Russell has one of the biggest cannons I’ve ever seen in my life. About five months ago, I wrote a post about a suspect named Willie D. Clark, whom police were targeting as the killer former NFL cornerback Darrent Williams. Clark has somewhat restored order and given a sense of peace to Darrent’s family by being a complete moron and unknowingly implicating himself in the murder.
Willie D. Clark faces 39 counts, including murder, attempted murder, assault, crimes of violence and a weapons violation, Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said.
Clark is in federal custody in a separate case. He was long considered a “person of interest” in Williams’ slaying but is the first suspect to be indicted.
Williams’ mother, Rosalind Williams of Fort Worth, Texas, told The Associated Press that the indictment brought her peace but also dredged up painful memories.
Nothing is ever guaranteed, but it seems like police have a pretty strong case against Clark so hopefully justice is served. I really can’t fathom having to lose one of my family members forever because someone decided to play tough in the club. It’s not worth it.
